Glorifying or Equalizing:

A friend of mine stated about plus size models being used as models and the fashion/advertising industry glorifying fat individuals, using Tess Holliday as an example.

His post is what has prompted me to write this blog:

I work for a Fashion Photographer doing blog posting <Fashion Maniac> , been posting for her off and on for about year and half.  During this time I have seen a large change in the models walking the runways and in the modeling industry.  I am very happy to see this change, it has been a hard battle for models who weren’t rile anorexia thin.

My friend wanted to know why we glorify plus size models – my question is why are we body shaming those with larger bodies? When the average woman is a 14 not a size 12 and below.

thin-fashion-modelSo does this look healthy?  In New York Fashion Magazine they followed four people 7 day food diaries within the fashion communities. This is the sample of a 21-year-old model:

10:00 A.M. Home
One bottle Kombucha tea. It’s a fermented Chinese tea. Supposedly it has all of these properties for the immune system, metabolism support, digestion. One apple.

1:45 P.M. Clinton Street Baking Company
Bowl of lobster bisque. I only stared at the biscuit that came with it.

Two gyoza, one piece scallop (no rice), one spicy scallop roll, one Clinton roll. Again, low-sodium soy sauce. I love sushi. It’s lean protein, it’s good for you. About a liter of water throughout the day.

In 2007, Israeli fashion model Hila Elmaliah died of anorexia at 34-years-old. She had dwindled away to just under 60 pounds when she passed.

via The Huffington Post:

The law’s supporters hope it will encourage the use of healthy models in local advertising and heighten awareness of digital tricks that transform already skinny women into seeming waifs.

“We want to break the illusion that the model we see is real,” said Liad Gil-Har, assistant to law sponsor Dr. Rachel Adato, who compared the battle against eating disorders to the struggle against smoking.

The law won support from a surprising quarter: one of Israel’s top model agents, Adi Barkan, who said in 30 years of work, he has seen young women become skinnier and sicker while struggling to fit the shrinking mold of what the industry considers attractive.

“They look like dead girls,” Barkan said.

Anorexia is the professional disease of many catwalk models which leads to depression, weakness and too much more serious health problems, the amount of death cases caused by anorexia continues to grow.

Which in my opinion is one of the reasons we need to see more “average” and “plus size” or larger people on the cat walks and in fashion magazines. Up until this past year and half Models in magazines were not far away from cat walk models, the difference was if they didn’t fit into the “look” the could be Photoshopped and made to look thinner.  So what is the issue with glorifying plus size models?

Perhaps; Because the fashion world, the advertising world, and the world; as a whole are realizing that body shaming is causing way more issues not only with those who are looking at the modeling world but with the models themselves then letting healthy models of all sizes, shapes, colors, and different abilities to share in some of the lime light!

I know many say it isn’t good to glorify someone who has health issues. Will if we are going to focus on POSSIBLE health issues; “There is nothing sexy about someone grabbing their arm and begging their photographer to call 911 in the middle of a photo shoot.”  With this frame of mind this would mean only the VERY FIT and could be models – make sure they go through physical!

Perhaps the cat walk models shouldn’t be allowed to model or be within the fashion industry either because they are prone to may have heart attacks, seizures, depression, anxiety, and many other health issues including with their teeth and breath.  According to the Journal of Epidemiology and Public Health; after reviewing more than 50 earlier studies, the researchers concluded that excessively underweight people were almost twice as likely to die, compared with those of normal weight.

Muscle Injections Almost Cost This Man His Arms

Father-of-one Romario Dos Santos Alves, 25, (pictured) used the potentially lethal cocktail to pump up his biceps to 25in and he now faces a catalogue of serious health issues.

Then their are the Body Builders; have issues with body cramps, heart issues, as well as, other health issues.  Sure body building is a great way to exercise, but it will put great strain on your heart and require it to pump enough oxygenated blood to feed your activity. And…this is a good thing when your heart is healthy.  The problem with bodybuilding and heart disease is that too often they train with the sole goal of getting big fast, at the risk of their own heart health. They take lots of different types protein, creatine, steroids,  powders and pills in various forms to achieve instant bulk or shrink-wrapped abs with the least amount of effort in the least amount of time. Or/and they do not eat appropriately and the rest of their health suffers while they build their muscle so the heart is working over time to help build the muscle the rest of the system is struggling to keep the body functioning properly.  For many bodybuilders seeking muscle doesn’t seem like a “problem” at all until they are lying on the operating room table. (I use to be in the body building world – I have seen so many things people would do to their own bodies just to get the muscles they desired).

Those who appear to of good average size, lower in weight can be in just as much danger of grabbing their arm and begging for someone to call 911. How do I know this? Because I was the one calling 911 while my mother who was an active middle age woman weighing in at 110 lbs, at 5’1 grabbed her arm and needed that call made!

“…doctors now think that the internal fat surrounding vital organs like the heart, liver or pancreas — invisible to the naked eye — could be as dangerous as the more obvious external fat that bulges underneath the skin.

“Being thin doesn’t automatically mean you’re not fat,” said Dr. Jimmy Bell, a professor of molecular imaging at Imperial College, London. Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.

According to the data, people who maintain their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are otherwise slim. “The whole concept of being fat needs to be redefined,” said Bell, whose research is funded by Britain’s Medical Research Council.”

No matter what size you are one must have a healthy system and life to some extent – This means: eating clean, drinking enough water to flush your system, making sure you keep your Cholesterol levels under control (LDL is the bad cholesterol levels it needs to be lower than your HDL).  As someone who is diabetic I know how important it is to make sure you keep track of your blood glucose healthy level.

The American Diabetes Association suggests the following targets for most non-pregnant adults with diabetes. More or less stringent glycemic goals may be appropriate for each individual.

  • A1C: 7%
A1C may also be reported as eAG:
    154 mg/dl
  • Before a meal (preprandial plasma glucose): 70–130 mg/dl
  • 1-2 hours after beginning of the meal (Postprandial plasma glucose)*: Less than 180 mg/dl

tesshollidaySo, if not allowing someone like Tess Holliday to model then why allow the run way models who are size 10 and below model?  That is JUST as unhealthy.   Why are we not hearing an out cry and people blasting their photos all over the place?  As I stated above, I work with in the  fashion world and I am happy to see the fashion world change slowly.  I am happy that the fashion world is finding a medium somewhere from EXTREMES. Believe me Tess Holliday is not an extreme on the obese side.

Tess makes it a point to let those of her fans, who follow her, be aware that she works out with a personal trainer four times a week and enjoys walking, swimming, and hiking in her free time. She avoids soda and drinks a lot of water. She cooks healthy and indulges in moderation like any sane person would.  I know a lot of people are going to say “if she was really eating healthy and working out so often she would be skinny”  This is not true, there are many health issues that make losing weight a very difficult matter.  Unless you are a doctor who is working with said individual you can not make any such declarations!

Just remember – Before you point those fingers maybe find out about the person you are pointing your fingers at – there are some who are heavy yet have a very healthy routine.   I do believe that if you are putting a strain on your body and it is an easy to move, then you need to lose weight, if you

have issues health wise, you need to lose weight. BUT – the same goes true with any other size and health issues.  No matter what size someone is be healthy, live healthy and learning that no matter what the size healthy is a choice.  There are people in this world of all shapes, sizes, colors, and different abilities that live healthy lives and people in the world need to see this.

Glorifying or Equalizing – To me it is both.

The Fashion and Advertising industries are equalizing across the board all Shapes, Sizes and differently able. They are glorifying the average person, what ever that is, thin, body builder, plus size, fat, different able.  Why is plus size models being glorified? In the past month not only Plus size models being “glorified” but so are differently able models. Why glorify them? Perhaps it is because they realize to not do so is to perpetuate the body shaming that has gone on for years, the bullying towards anyone who does not fit into what the fashion world had air-sprayed and starved into the minds of our young as what is “healthy” ,”right size”, or seen as beautiful.

Maddy's mom, Roseanne, said she is modeling to spread awareness about Down syndrome.

Maddy’s mom, Roseanne, said she is modeling to spread awareness about Down syndrome.

Read about Madeline Stuart here she is a young teen aspiring model who happens to have Down Syndrome and is reaching for her dream  to become a model, but she also vows to change the world’s views of what Down Syndrome is and how it affects each person with Down Syndrome, as every person who has Down Syndrome is as different as you and I.

Please feel free to comment – leave your thoughts on any part of this blog – just remember be civil.

On The Duggars

This part is my statement about the whole Josh Dugger thing:  It is DISGUSTING!!!  The only ones who are clear of any disgust in the whole situation is the victims and the children.  Jim Bob the father has proven himself to be not only a lier but a hipacrite;  in 2002 while running for a set in the Senate he made this statement; (paraphrasing here), all rape and insest should be treated as a capital crime and all pepertrators should be put to death. Yet, when his own son is the pepertrator excuses are made!  Even though their is a police report made on Josh, nothing is done! Yes he was a 12 year old boy, a minor, but look back on history and their have been many other minors who have been proscuted as adults due to their molestation of another child and their crimes! Why not Josh Dugger? According to attorneys at Wallin & Klarich law firm children / minors can and have been charged as adults for molestation on other children/minors.  So I say again why not Josh Dugger? Why was his crimes hidden until years latter and it came out on television show? Because for some disgusting, misguided reason they thought it would boost the ratings?

I say we all should speak out for these silenced women and children who have no voice, not just Josh Dugger’s victims but molestation and rape victims all over the world who have no voice, or feel they have no voice – let us speak out and say it is NOT OK – for any age man/woman to molest or rape another human being!!!

The part below has been re-blogged from What a Witch

What a Witch

Sexual Abuse Silence

I don’t want to talk about the parents.

I don’t want to talk about how they raised their children in a cult.

I don’t want to talk about Josh Duggar.

He’s a child molester.

I don’t want to talk about his “reform.”

Josh and his parents insist that he is no longer a danger, but Josh and his parents are also the people who hid his sexual assault.

So maybe their word is not so valuable.

Oh wait, I’m sorry, I misspoke. (mistyped?)

Their word means less than nothing and I would be perfectly happy if they would shut the fuck up.

I don’t want to talk about the family’s connection with Hobby Lobby.

I don’t want to talk about the fact that the place that Josh was sent to for “counseling,” the place wherein the family claims that Josh underwent his “reform” was run by a man who is…

Rape Does Not Have A Gender:

qj4e9b0425I ran across a status on Facebook a few days ago where a few people were discussing an article that is about three women who held a guy at gun point and raped him. Rape is not always penetration for men or women, but any sexual act that is unwanted. In the Merriam-Webster dictionary the definition of rape is as follows:

**unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim.**
However, the Federal laws on rape are much more detailed you can read them here.  According to Federal laws rape is any act that is intent on sexual contact with out the consent of another.

Reading the discussion others were having with the article above, it struck me how many men were laughing it off and making jokes about the rape.  “I could never get so lucky” ,  “I hope they were hot babes”,  and the worse in my opinion was “what kind of weak ass man gets himself raped by women?”  It truly was no surprise, to me, that the women were taking a stand against rape, even when there was a man was involved.  Men are taught from a young age that men are not able to be raped because they are the masculine gender, which means they have to be the stronger gender.    So, if a man says they have been raped by a woman then they have to be joking, and of course they wouldn’t ever admit to being raped by a man, without losing their own masculinity.

by-the-numbersThe truth is; One in five women and one in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives. Approximately one in 45 men has been made to penetrate an intimate partner during his lifetime.

None of these statistics count for those men who do not report their rape. Such as the estimated 13,900 military men who experience unwanted sexual contact a year. However, in 2014 National Crime Victimization Survey asked 40,000 households about rape and sexual violence and discovered some rather shocking numbers, the percentage of men who have been raped had gone up.   38 percent of incidents were against men, where in years past men had accounted for somewhere between 5 and 14 percent of rape and sexual violence victims. These survives were only taking into effect the basic definition of rape “those forced to penetrate or be penetrated at force”, in the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey every type of sexual non-consensual rape was taken into account, not just penetration, then the rates of non-consensual sexual contact basically equalized, with 1.270 million being women and 1.267 million being men claiming to be victims of sexual violence.

Researcher Lara Stemple from Health and Human Rigtumblr_mtn9tj0wqo1s8iwnqo6_500hts Project at UCLA has also found in her research that The experience of men and women is “a lot closer than any of us would expect,”.  For some kinds of victimization, men and women have roughly equal experiences. Stemple concluded that we need to “completely rethink our assumptions about sexual victimization,” and especially our fallback model that men are always the perpetrators and women the victims.  We need to stop thinking that men can’t get raped, that no matter how many times they say no, they secretly like it. That only little boys can be raped and only because they get threatened and coerced.

Many say will if a man has an erection he must want sex, so if he is saying no, he is still wanting it especially because we assume men are sexually insatiable. But what if it was said the same were women are concerned “You got wet, you must of wanted it, even though you said no”. The mere presence of physiological symptoms associated with arousal does not in fact indicate actual arousal, much less willing participation! No still means NO..it doesn’t mean Yes, It doesn’t mean Maybe, it means NO for ALL Genders!

So how about, as a blog I recently read said:  Become accepting – Become supportive – Become Connected!

Back With A Vengeance!

Back with a Vengeance!

TrinityHawk

For those who are still around waiting for my post to begin again, I appreciate your loyalty.  I won’t go into why I haven’t been posting that is irreverent. But, what I will let you know is that Whirling Mind & Wondering Thoughts will be changing a bit from this point on.  It will still be Whirling Mind & Wondering Thoughts, but it will be more about issues in the world today and my thoughts on these issues.

To start this new page in Whirling Mind and Wondering Thoughts lets talk about those who take Vengeance into their own hands. So, many people find a need to post about “wrong doings” on Social Media’s these days and blast other people’s faces, personal information, etc all over for the satisfaction of the fact they can’t or don’t want to confront someone themselves or they can’t seem to leave issues in the hand of the law.  This is for lots of reasons. The majority of society thrives on drama and/or they don’t trust the law any longer.  Now don’t get me wrong their is another issue here, and I have found myself caught up in this social media “bullying”.  When one of our friends post something and we jump on the peer band wagon. I mean if our peer says this happen, then it MUST BE SO! Right?

Is this really what the world is coming to? Assuming and making up what we THINK happen, then splashing it around for the world to see, so a whole families life will be ruined even if we are right?

In this day and age –

We are guilty until proven innocent!

Because we are guilty until proven innocent the mass public has taken on the mob mentality, Boston riots for example, Read These Three Articles About the Reasons for the Baltimore Riots – Nation – Boston.com. True not everyone was violent and had the mob mentality, but it was a large crowd that did and through out the few days that it continued I read post after post of encouragement on social media.

This mob mentality and social media bullying and shaming doesn’t just go against adults or government officials either, which is the real horrific aspect of it all.  I actually saw post on Facebook where a young boy of 16 was being accused of mistreating an elderly man in a parking lot and the thread under the photo was horrible! Including finding and sharing his home address and phone number – threats to go beat some respect into him by grown adults!! Really ADULTS sharing a minor’s personal information and threatening him bodily harm and even his life?

Some may think will if they deserve it… How many people get these things posted who DIDN’T deserve it? Has anyone ever stopped to think about this?  Only this morning their was an article released and YES posted on social medias (Facebook is where I saw it posted).  Where an Melbourne Woman who mistakenly shamed a man on social media because she believed he was taking photos of her children at a local Target, when he was just taking a selfie with a large cardboard Darth Vader to send to HIS OWN children, has offered a grovelling apology after he has received death threats.

The mother took a photo of the man at the Westfield Knox shopping center in Melbourne’s east and shared it to Facebook last Wednesday with a status branding him a ‘creep’ but that wasn’t all she stated!  In her full Facebook status along with his photograph that she took with her cell phone she stated:  “She claimed the man approached her children while they were sitting watching Frozen on a screen in the children’s clothing section at Target. ‘He said ‘hey kids’ they looked up and he took a photo, then he said I’m sending this to a 16 yr old,’ she wrote on Facebook. The woman said she took a photo of the man then removed her children from the area and informed security. ‘Centre management were straight onto and so are the police, hopefully he is caught,’ she wrote. ‘Police said if he is a registered sex offender he will be charged, this happened at Knox, be safe with your kids.” via Melbourne mum who shamed Star Wars selfie man on Facebook apologises | Daily Mail Online.

When in actuality he was taking his FIRST ever selfie and was feeling very self conscious about it, had looked over at a set of children, who were sitting BY themselves with no parent present, he himself made an assumption, and assumed they were waiting to take their pictures with the cut out. So, stated; “I will only be a minute” to them.  Turned took a selfie and walked away.  As he was trying to figure out how to send the selfie to his children the woman took his photo and posted it.

Now, I want each and everyone one of you – I know I did – think about all the photos you have looked at accusing someone of something horrible, thought OMG how could they and re-posted the status.  Lets be more careful about what we are spreading around, this is just like spreading rumors!  Unless it is a credible news media then why are we passing on hear say information?

What is your opinion do you think we have become more  Guilty until proven Innocent country?
