Pope Francis – My Opinion vs Maureen Dowd’s

I was reading an article on Flipboard this morning about Pope Francis and it brought me back to when I was 12 and 13.  You see during the first part of my life I was Southern Baptist, even baptized at the age of 11, while I lived with my father and his third wife.

When I moved back with my mother at the age of 12, I was inducted into the Lutheran church, finding myself more comfortable in a church then I had ever felt.  Yet, due to suffering from very server PSTD from the abuse I had suffered during my younger years at the hands of my father’s third wife. I was also introduced to our Native American ancestry and Native American spirituality. My mother took me to see my aunt who was a medicine woman, in hopes to help me with my PSTD.

Roughly a year later my mother moved us to the Catholic Church, you see she studied religions too, and was always looking for the right one for her. I realized their was not such a HUGE difference in the Lutheran church and the Catholic Church but their was a difference in enough that once again I wasn’t feeling all that comfortable in church, yet my mother was very comfortable and felt like she had come home.  I found myself at the age of 12 and 13 wanting to study all religions and see the similarities and differences between them,

I tell you this back story because today I am a non-denominational ordain mister who still studies religions and spirituality.  I also follow what is going on with the Catholic church because of my mother and because of my interest in religions and spirituality.  I do not because I consider myself Catholic any longer, but my mother considered herself Catholic up to the moment she breathed her last breath.

With all of this information I you will better understand the rest of this blog better and why I have such a deep interest in Pope Francis and what is going on with him.

I was reading an article by Maureen Dowd from Flipboard this morning and she stated within the article “the biographer said that, for him, Francis’ “slow progress on sex abuse” and his lack of forward motion on women are “his huge areas of weakness.”  She goes on to state how she feels Pope Francis’ would be the perfect 19th-Century Pope because of his popularity with the crowds, his outlook on capitalism, but also his “close mindedness” on women in the church.  –  Yet, with in her own article she mentions he is not fully mindedness about this subject, that he has even approached women friends of his and spoke about how to fix this issue, but is unsure of how to go about it.  That he speaks on the fact that women are the back bone of many societies, and nuns are the back bone of the church, etc.    But, she seems to focus on the one statement where he stated “The church has spoken, the door is closed”

Now, let me point one thing out to the readers: The Pope is much like the president, in that he can not FORCE the church to abide by his ruling, he isn’t a dictator.  He may feel one way, but the inner workings of the church may feel another and all he can do is speak on what he feels is best for the church and speak out for the church and the nation.  Which is in my opinion what he is doing and what is making him so popular.  – your opinions?
